For this example I am using the Netapplications.com website.  A title tag not only tells search engines what the topic of a particular page is but also your users. You should place the <title> tag within the <head> tag of the HTML document.  For the best results a unique title should be created for each page on your site.

 Netapplications.com example:

<head><title>Net Applications | Bringing Together Applications, Services and Partners</title><META CONTENT=”Net Applications.  Bringing together applications, services, and partners.”><META CONTENT=”website statistics, seo, search engine submission, web site monitoring, affiliate program, web site counter, monitoring tools, search engine tools, managed dns”>

Highlighted in the HTML above, the title of the homepage for netapplications.com, lists the business name and three main focus areas.  You could also include other information such as the location of the business or maybe a few of your main offerings.

If someone does a search and you appear in the search results page, the contents of the title tag will usually appear in the first line of those results.  The keywords the users searched for will appear in bold.  This is done to help users recognize if the page is likely to be relevant to what they were searching for.

In this example the user searched for applications; now compare the first line in the results below to the title tag in the HTML above.  You will see they are the same.

The netapplication.com homepage shows up as a result, with the title listed on the first line, notice that applications the search term the user queried for appears in bold throughout the search results.

The ultimate goal is to have the user find the search results intriguing enough for them to click on and visit the specific webpage of your website.  If the user clicks on your results they will be directed to the specific webpage and the title which you specified in the HTML document will appear at the top of the browser.

I want to restate the last line in the first paragraph of this post.  For the best results a unique title should be created for each page on your website.  This point is important because titles for deeper pages on your site should accurately describe the focus of that particular page and also can include your site or business name.

A user does a keyword search for marketing applications, the results are below.

In the search results above you see that the title is relevant to the content of the specific deeper page of netapplications.com and marketing applications is highlighted throughout the search results.

The following points are important to remember about title tags.

  1. Create unique title tags for each page of your website.
  2. Choose a title that accurately conveys the topic of each webpage.
  3. Choose titles that are both brief and descriptive.

I wish you Good SEO.  If you need assistance creating unique and accurate page titles feel free to contact netapplications.com at 1-866-784-5180.
