Google today released an experimental version of Correlate, a data mining engine that enables people to find correlating search trends.

Published by Google’ philanthropic unit, Google.org, Correlate can be used to find matching search patterns that can provide hints about ongoing trends. The tool asks for a search terms and then matches closely correlating search terms against it.

For example, the search phrase “touch screen” reveals that, over time, there are several other phrases that match its search activity – including drawing games, online coloring games, and painting games. Google says that the data is offered in real time and basically reflects the functionality of Google Trends in reverse.
